The '70's were bad everywhere...

...especially in 1981. [found at Sepia Mutiny.]

Please enjoy this special moment from the movie Ellam Inba Mayam. My entire mind went into shock for three minutes trying to absorb what the costume designer and choreographer had hoped to accomplish through the visual display before me. I did not, however, suceed. Perhaps you will fare better.

(Bonus: Note the 2-3 authentic Negros during the "lift" move on stage!)

I'm still confused by this one...Is he impersonating a black man (moves and all) or a cool cat? I've seen some horrible Bollywood movie clips with Indians in blackface "boogie oogie oogieing" afros and all in a disco, so I don't know what to make of this clip. It's not offensive, but it still makes me say, "HUH?" But if Bollywood deceided to create a hybrid (african american/desi) flick, if it isn't rife with sterotypes (about both) I'd be the first in line to see it!!!

That, I believe is Kamal Hassan being his foxy self! I'm rumba diggin it, man.

This is technically not Bollywood...it's a tamil film...so, Tollywood ;)

You have to understand that India had very little outside exposure those days, so this would be based on some person in the film industry's attempt to depict the kool (and obviously corrupt, which is why the "club" is peopled with sinister looking don-types and ladies shamelessly exposing their-gasp!- legs!) world of Western culture at that time...disco, soul, and what all to the masses who have heard of, but not really seen this stuff for themselves. Actually it's probably not from that time, because I bet this movie was made in the 80's...India was kinda behind a few years...bellbottoms were "in" well into the 80's. It's really not trying to mock or make fun...they really do want to be down :)
